To serve the people of Oregon by protecting, managing, and promoting stewardship of Oregon’s forests to enhance environmental, economic, and community sustainability.
The Office of State Fire Marshal (OSFM) has a long history of protecting lives, property, and resources across Oregon. Serving Oregon since 1917, the OSFM oversees fire prevention, investigation, and education programs throughout the state. With headquarters in Salem and regional offices in Portland, Springfield, Bend, and Medford, the OSFM has personnel ready to serve communities statewide.
As the oldest established State Fire Marshal's office in the United States, OSFM has a proven track record of effective fire protection and prevention. The OSFM licenses all fire alarm and sprinkler system contractors, inspects fire systems in schools, hospitals, and public buildings, investigates fire causes, and provides specialized technical services. The OSFM also manages fire training standards and certification for over 15,000 firefighters.
One of OSFM's key priorities is raising public fire safety awareness. Through the Keep Oregon Green Association and Oregon Fire Prevention Cooperative, the OSFM spreads fire prevention messaging across Oregon's diverse landscapes. With debris burning the leading cause of wildfires in Oregon, OSFM's fire prevention efforts focus heavily on safe debris burning practices.
With dedicated leadership, professional personnel, and strong partnerships across Oregon, the OSFM stands ready to continue its tradition of outstanding public service. As an agency, OSFM values cooperation, excellence, integrity, respect, and leadership in fulfilling its mission. The OSFM looks forward to working collaboratively to protect Oregon's residents, infrastructure, communities, and natural resources from the dangers of fire and life safety hazards.
